British Swim School of Lancaster

British Swim School of Lancaster is a locally owned franchise of British Swim School, which currently operates in over 100 pools in 15 states in the U.S. and internationally in Turkey. Because of local community relationships, British Swim School is becoming more widely available at neighborhood pools near you.  In Lancaster, programs are offered at Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center, Brethren Village and Greenfield Estates.

The organization holds more than 9,000 lessons per week nationally and conducted more than 475,000 swimming lessons in 2016. Classes are available for babies, children and adults.

The British Swim School was founded in 1981 by Rita Goldberg, a national swimmer and dedicated swim instructor in Britain.  Goldberg’s methodology has evolved over the last 35 years and is used to teach water safety survival skills to children as young as three months old.  These unique teaching methods have become a recognized trademark of the British Swim School. The back float is considered the most important water survival skill, as it enables swimmers to rest, breathe and call for help, alleviating the “silent” danger of floating face down.  Drowning is the leading cause of death in children under five.

British Swim School is aligned with the Safer3 Water Safety Foundation, whose mission is to “protect every life from drowning through education and heightened water safety awareness”.

Online registration is available at www.britishswimschool.com/lancaster or by calling 717-945-6114.

Be Water Safe - Take Swim Lessons!

With all of the warm weather we've experienced over the past few weeks - it's started to make us thing about the summer pool season!  Although, it's likely that winter will come back one more time (after all, it's still February) t's not too early to start swimming lessons before the warm weather is here to stay!

British Swim School of Lancaster offers water survival and swim lessons at 3 convenient locations across Lancaster County: Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center (perfect for children 6 and under), Brethren Village Retirement Community and Greenfield Estates.  Classes are offered for children as young as three months through adults.  Our focus is to teach children water safety and survival skills for all new swimmers before we begin to develop competitive swim strokes.  Classes are held year-round in indoor heated pools and we do not have sessions - you can start as soon as you are ready!

Nationwide, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children under five years of age.  Seventy percent of all preschoolers who drown are in the care of one or both parents at the time and 33% occur at the home of friends, neighbors or relatives.  A child can drown in the time it takes to answer a telephone. And still 58% of parents do not consider drowning to be a threat to their children.

Drowning for the most part is totally preventable and here at the British Swim School of Lancaster we believe strongly in a multi-faceted approach to water safety. Here are a few tips that will assure your time around the pool (or indeed any body of water) is a SAFE and FUN experience.

  • Delegate a responsible ‘Water Watcher’ during parties or family events that are held around the pool or water.
  • If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first.
  • Teach your kids to swim!  It seems obvious but statistics show that the majority of children who drown had not been taught basic water survival skills. Ballet, karate, soccer and the like are all commendable activities but only swimming lessons could potentially save your little one’s life. Statistics indicate that children who take lessons from an accredited water safety program, reduce their chances of drowning by 88%.  As with any developmental activity, swimming skills need to be practiced in order to be retained.  Many parents make the mistake of stopping lessons once kids go back to school and are amazed they’ve regressed so much by the time spring comes around again.
  • Be aware of the dangers of being in or around water.  Young children are naturally drawn to water and do not comprehend how dangerous it can be.

There is plenty you can do at home to educate your children about water safety and to acclimate your kids to the water.  Talk to them about ‘what would happen if’ and come up with safety measures they can understand and carry out.  Teach them not to go into the pool if a friend has fallen in.  Instead tell them to look for anything that floats that they can throw into the pool to help (we call it ‘Throw, don’t go!’). Teach them emergency numbers and how to call 911. Make sure they understand to shout out for help.

All these can be valuable life saving skills and save precious minutes in the event of a water accident.
