Welcome to Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery
Eighty percent of the pretzels made in the United States are produced in Pennsylvania. That’s not surprising, given that the birthplace of commercial pretzel baking is located in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country.
It all started more than 150 years ago in four brick ovens in the quaint and historic town of Lititz. In 1861, Julius Sturgis got the idea that hard pretzels would make a tasty snack – and a good business– and founded the very first pretzel bakery in America. The original bakery is still located at 219 East Main Street (Route 772) in Lititz , and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can tour the pretzel bakery and see the very ovens where the first crispy, twisted snacks were concocted.
While learning about the history of pretzel making, you’ll be handed your very own piece of dough and get a step-by-step lesson on how to twist a pretzel. The bakery is open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but closed Sundays. Tours are conducted from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The bakery store features freshly baked, hand-twisted soft pretzels, unique varieties of hard pretzels, and souvenirs.
